Each Wednesday, 3:00 pmh month this group meets to discuss a book after the discussion leader gives background information about the author and the book. In May, we vote on the next year’s list of books and volunteer to host or co-host a meeting or to lead a discussion.
An ‘antiquarian’ is a person who collects, studies, or sells valuable old things (such as books). Through informative presentations, day trips, and discussions, this group learns about antiques, the history of our society and significant historical places in Missouri. No meetings in January or over the summer.
Our goal is to complete one project each meeting. We meet in homes and work with a variety of mediums and techniques: clay, sewing, felt, painting, felting, stenciling, etc. We plan projects in May for the following year and pay a fee in September to cover the cost of a year’s worth of materials.
The Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion group was formed over forty years ago at the home of Bernice Burkeholder. After Bernice passed away at the age of 99 in the summer of 2008, the members voted to rename the group in her honor. All members read the same book monthly and a discussion is led by a volunteer member. At the April meeting books are selected for the next year and members volunteer to co-host and lead the discussions. Meetings vary between Zoom and in person.
The group meets at coffee Shop in the Schnucks Grocery Store at Providence and Broadway. This is a casual meeting of new, as well as old members. Our mission is to slow down, take a deep breath and enjoy each other’s company. What better way to make new friends but also, renew old friendships, with a casual lunch or maybe a glass of ice tea.
If you enjoy history and family stories, join us in the search for our ancestors’ lives and times. You can write the history of your family. This group has programs to help with your research. The group regularly attends local genealogy conferences and consults regional genealogy libraries. All skill levels welcome.
People who like to cook, eat and socialize will enjoy Gourmands. Members meet monthly to share dinners, have parties with spouses/partners or eat at restaurants.
The group meets for lunch and has a very congenial atmosphere to get better acquainted. We will visit some of Columbia’s favorite spots.
Each member informs the group about a movie, stage performance or television program she has seen and the group discusses their views. Our group has been meeting since 1999 with several initial group members still participating. We have lively discussions and welcome new members.
A gathering of women with a strong interest in any form of needlework such as knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, embroidery, quilting, etc. Bring a needlework project to work on while you have fun visiting.
Named after past Fortnightly President and long-time tennis group chair Susie Moore, after her passing in 2012. Come to play tennis, make friends, stay fit and have a good time. We meet at the Fairview Tennis Courts and play doubles/rotate partners. All skill levels.
Four times a year, we gather to enjoy tea and learn about its benefits. We meet in members’ homes or in area tea rooms. Come enjoy tea and company with this fun group.
While the life of Fortnightly largely occurs within its many Interest Groups, members are invited to a minimum of three club-wide gatherings each year. New and returning members get acquainted at the annual Fall Welcome often held a university facility on or near campus. Club members also gather in December for a holiday luncheon and fundraiser. A club-wide luncheon and business meeting is held each spring to elect the new members of the Leadership Team. Other club-wide activities include, for example, a Shakespeare’s Pizza Fundraiser in the fall and spring as well as a Plant Your Garden Fundraiser at the Strawberry Hill Farms in April and May. Check the latest newsletter(this should be a link) for information about upcoming events.
The Fortnightly Club Leadership Team consists of members who volunteer to see that the club runs smoothly. The leadership team consists of 10 to 14 members. The team meets regularly to report on the progress of plans for future Club activities and outcomes of recent activities. Additional business includes disbursing monies as indicated in the adopted budget and approving the activities of the committees.
